The rectum is a component of the lower gastrointestinal tract. It is a continuation of the sigmoid colon, and connects to the anus. The rectum acts as a temporary storage site for feces.
Rectal prolapse occurs when the rectal walls have prolapsed to a degree where they protrude out the anus and are visible outside the body. There may be mucous discharge, rectal bleeding, degrees of fecal incontinence and obstructed defecation symptoms. Surgical interventions are based on the degree of prolapse as well as other patient factors and include Laparoscopic Ventral Rectopexy and Perineal Rectosigmoidectomy.
