Breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful way for new mothers to nourish and bond with their babies. As we celebrate National Breastfeeding Month this August, it is crucial to shed light on the numerous health benefits breastfeeding offers to both infants and their mothers.

In northern Idaho, Northwest Pediatrics stands as a beacon of support, providing exceptional pediatric services for families, especially for newborn infants. As part of this support, we encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies for optimal health and well-being.

Why Breastfeeding?

Breast milk is nature’s perfect food, uniquely designed to meet the nutritional needs of infants. For one thing, It is rich in antibodies, enzymes, and essential nutrients that bolster a baby’s immune system, protecting infants against a myriad of illnesses. Research shows that breastfed infants have a lower risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, allergies, asthma, obesity, and even sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Nutritionally, it provides babies with all they need for proper growth and development, and breastmilk is usually easy for the baby to digest. Breastfeeding does not cost anything and needs no preparation time.

Breastfeeding is beneficial for the mother’s health as well. It helps in postpartum weight loss by burning extra calories, reduces her risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers, and promotes faster recovery from childbirth. Psychologically, the physical closeness and emotional bond that breastfeeding nurtures between mother and child also contribute to the overall well-being of both.

Though a natural process, we know that breastfeeding is not always easy. At Northwest Pediatrics, our pediatric providers can offer valuable advice and guidance to new mothers about breastfeeding techniques, proper latching, and establishing a successful breastfeeding routine. This personalized care ensures that mothers have the confidence and knowledge they need to navigate any challenges that may arise.

Supporting Families When Breastfeeding is Not an Option

Despite our encouragement of breastfeeding, we know that there are some circumstances in which mothers will be unable to breastfeed their babies for one reason or another. For example, if a mother has a specific type of medical condition or disease that can be passed to the baby through breastmilk, or if the mother is taking a necessary medication or another drug, breastfeeding may harm the baby.

In other cases, the baby may have a medical condition that makes breastfeeding harmful. For example, galactosemia is a disorder that makes the baby unable to digest the sugar galactose, leading to a toxic buildup of this sugar in the baby’s system that can cause liver problems.

For situations like this, breastfeeding is not possible. Babies will need to be nourished with formulas designed to meet their needs. Unfortunately, in the last few years, infant formula has been difficult to find, and this has created tremendous difficulties for new mothers.

At Northwest Pediatrics, though we encourage breastfeeding, we know this is not always an option. Our doctors can address these special circumstances by identifying problems and helping families to find the right formula for their babies so that both mothers and babies can confidently move forward to maintain their health and well-being.
